Elbon Joseph Ducote died attempting to save Bryan C. LaCombe from drowning, Mansura, Louisiana, July 21, 1989. Bryan, 8, was playing in a branch of the Old River, near a boat landing, as Ducote, 62, retired, was removing a motorboat from the water. Ducote saw that Bryan was in difficulty and, despite a history of heart trouble, immediately entered the water for him. He swam to Bryan, who was about 50 feet from the bank, and both of them submerged and resurfaced several times. Bryan was rescued by others. Ducote, who was retrieved from beneath the surface of the water, was taken to the bank by others, but he could not be revived.
