Elbridge Essigs helped to save Regina M. Glodek from drowning, Seaside Park, New Jersey, July 30, 1973. When her son, 7, was caught by a riptide in the Atlantic Ocean, Mrs. Glodek, 28, swam to him; and both were carried seaward by the strong current. A man and his wife went to their aid but then could make no progress toward the beach. Essigs, 58, general service manager, arrived to give assistance. In deep water 225 feet from shore, Essigs supported Mrs. Glodek while the man and his wife kept James afloat. All became fatigued due to the current. They were moved seaward until a series of large waves swept them back to safety in wadable water.
