Eleanor R. Rodriguez, 25, housewife, saved Florence M. Brown, 61, from drowning, Venice, Florida, July 5, 1953. While bathing in the Gulf of Mexico, Mrs. Brown, her daughter, and 3-year-old granddaughter were caught in a strong undertow and carried to deep water 80 feet from shore. Tiring in her effort to support Mrs. Brown, the daughter got hold of her child and swam to shore with difficulty. The daughter’s calls for help attracted Mrs. Rodriguez, who ran 125 feet to the shore, entered the water, and swam 95 feet to Mrs. Brown through waves a foot and a half high. To avoid a struggle, Mrs. Rodriguez got behind Mrs. Brown, who was 20 pounds heavier than she, and obtained a hold. With effort she towed Mrs. Brown 60 feet to water three feet deep and then waded 10 feet closer to shore supporting her. A man aided Mrs. Brown from the water as Mrs. Rodriguez continued to shore. Mrs. Brown had swallowed much water and was exhausted. Mrs. Rodriguez was tired and winded. Both recovered. 42926-3929
