Eli M. Peskin attempted to save Richard C. Coveney from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, March 18, 1926. Richard, 6, broke through the ice on Wards Pond 30 feet from the bank and went into water 10 feet deep. Peskin, 29, insurance agent, who could not swim, crawled on ice not more than a half-inch thick to the hole in the ice, dragged Richard out, and started to crawl with him toward the bank. When he had gone about six feet, the ice broke, and he and Richard went into the water. Peskin endeavored to keep up by paddling but gradually went under the water. Two men pulled him and Richard to wadable water. Peskin could not stand for weakness, but he recovered. Richard could not be revived. 26115-2212
