Elias B. Adams, 68, crossing watchman, died attempting to save Olivia R. Schmidt, 18, from being run over by a train, Dayton, Ohio, November 14, 1912. At night, at a point illuminated by an electric arc?light, Miss Schmidt heedlessly walked toward a track on which a passenger train, which was then but 150 feet from her, was approaching at a speed of 15 m.p.h. Adams was beside the track 42 feet away, between her and the train, and saw her danger. He shouted and ran toward her, but his shout startled her and she stopped on the rail of the track. As Adams ran, he extended his arms to grasp her. Both were struck by the locomotive, and Adams was instantly killed. Miss Schmidt died several hours later. 9385-760
