Elinor Imogene Randolph, 15, school-girl, saved Frances I. Lewis, 9, from drowning, Rockford, West Virginia, April 16, 1939. Frances fell from a foot-bridge into the flood waters of Lost Creek and drifted in a current of eight m.p.h. Miss Randolph, who could not swim, ran along the bank, waded 30 feet, and in water about neck deep lunged toward Frances but missed her. She lost her footing; and she and Frances drifted t350 feet to and under a gate, which lay on the surface, swinging from a supporting horizontal pole. The water there was seven feet deep. Miss Randolph got hold of the gate with one hand and then got hold of Frances with the other. Frances was unconscious. A few minutes later a man waded and swam to the girls and took them in separate trips to the bank. Frances was revived.
