Elizabeth A. Hirtz died attempting to save Frederick H. Hare from drowning, Norfolk, Virginia, May 3, 1975. In an arm of Lake Whitehurst, Frederick, 13, floundered in five feet of water above a deep layer of soft mud. Miss Hirtz, 18, college student, entered the water and swam to Frederick, who struggled with her. She sank and did not reappear. A police officer arrived in a boat, took Frederick safely aboard, and then dived into the muddy water. He found Miss Hirtz lying unconscious on the bottom of the lake in the deep mud, and he took her to the surface. She could not be revived. 54651-6169
