Elizabeth C. Stone, 20, waitress, died attempting to save William L. Van Buren, Jr., 20, radioman, from drowning, Saugerties, New York, June 20, 1945. Van Buren and Miss Stone swam in choppy water across Esopus Creek, and Miss Stone got footing in shallow water on a rock ledge. Van Buren tried to climb onto the ledge but fell back and was submerged in water 60 feet deep. He rose, drifted away in a swift current, and called to Miss Stone for help. She plunged and swam 15 feet to him. He grasped her arm, they sank, and neither reappeared. 40479-3470
