Elizabeth E. Ghear, 12, schoolgirl, saved Elvira Halladay, 13, from drowning, Pleasant Valley, New York, August 1, 1925. While swimming in Wappinger Creek, Elvira went under the surface momentarily in water eight feet deep and was unable to swim farther. From shallow water, Elizabeth swam 20 feet to Elvira. Elvira threw her arms around her, pinning one of her arms to her side. A struggle followed, and, unable to free herself from Elvira, Elizabeth then swam with her under water 30 feet to wadable water. 25822-2253
