Elizabeth S. Wise saved Charles L. Goodhand, Jr., from drowning, Chester, Maryland, August 16, 1923. Charles, 17, student, jumped from a rowboat as it was capsizing in Goodhands Creek 300 feet from the bank, where the water was seven feet deep. He swam 15 feet toward the bank and then struggled in an exhausted condition. Elizabeth, 15, student, who was much smaller than Charles, swam from the overturned boat to Charles, who had become unconscious, and resting his head in the crook of her left arm, she swam with him to the boat. Thinking that she could not take Charles to the bank and that their combined weight would submerge the boat, she held to the boat with one hand and supported Charles with the other. Her arm became tired holding Charles, and in trying to raise his chin to rest it upon the boat, she lost her hold on him, and he sank. Elizabeth went under the surface, brought Charles up, and held him as before. Some men on the bank were attracted, but by the time they reached Elizabeth in a rowboat, she had supported Charles for about 18 minutes. The men took Charles to the bank, and Elizabeth, after resting, swam 150 feet to wadable water. Charles was revived. 23643-1964
