Elizabeth Scott Shatto helped to save Lynette D. Bennett from drowning, Surfside, Texas, August 18, 1987. Lynette, 11, waded into the Gulf of Mexico and was carried about 300 feet from shore by the current. Alerted by Lynette’s companion, Elizabeth, 16, high school student, and a friend ran into the water and swam to her. Each grasped one of Lynette’s arms and, despite the current and rough surf, swam back toward shore, pulling Lynette. When they were in wadable water, they were aided by others. Lynette was hospitalized overnight for effects of her ordeal, and she recovered. Elizabeth and her friend were exhausted, but they too recovered.
