Ella E. Bukosy helped to save James B. Adams, Jr., from drowning, Southampton, New York, August 19, 1920. James, 11, waded into deep water in Lake Agawam 40 feet from shore. He went under the surface several times and called for help. Miss Bukosy, 18, housemaid, who was a poor swimmer, swam 25 feet to him with the aid of a pair of water wings. He grasped her extended hand, and Miss Bukosy attempted to swim with him. She could make no progress, and her failure in an attempt to touch bottom caused her to lose self control. At some time during the act she lost the water wings. She began to thresh, still retaining her hold on James’s hand. A man reached them and attempted to give aid, but he sank and was drowned. Miss Bukosy and James were rescued by a lifeguard, who arrived shortly after the man sank. 20793-1637
