Elliott Wayne Reed rescued two children from a runaway automobile, West Point, Virginia, May 3, 1990. A 3-year-old boy and a small girl were left unattended inside a car, its motor running, in the parking lot of a store. The car began to move forward; it left the parking lot, entered the highway, and headed toward an intersection. Standing in the parking lot, Reed, 28, waste treatment helper, saw that there was no adult in the car. He immediately chased the car, catching up to it as it was entering the intersection, headed into the path of a pickup truck. Reed opened the driver’s door of the car and put one foot on the brake pedal and one hand on the steering wheel. He then disengaged the car’s gears, but the car collided with the driver’s side of the pickup before both vehicles came to a stop. Reed sustained an abrasion to one side of his chest, from which he recovered.
