Ellis Burton died after attempting to help rescue Larry D. Daniel from suffocation, Greenwood, Mississippi, December 12, 1990. Daniel, 46, was in a cottonseed meal storage building of the plant where he was employed when part of a 39-foot-high pile of cottonseed meal collapsed, burying him to his chest. Burton, 48, maintenance supervisor at the plant, entered the building and, seeing Daniel, immediately started to dig him out. As the pile continued to give way, Burton wrapped his arms around Daniel and attempted to pull him free. Other slides occurred, completely burying the men. Arriving plant employees and rescue personnel freed them, but Daniel could not be revived, and Burton was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
