Emiliano Sepulveda, Jr., saved Evan J. Blake and another man from assault, Bronx, New York, October 31, 1984. Blake, 22, and another man were being assaulted by a gang of about 30 youths in an outdoor recreation area of a housing complex. Sepulveda, 37, an off-duty port authority police officer, was walking with his family in the neighborhood when he saw the fracas. Despite being unarmed and without calling for further assistance, Sepulveda approached to within 15 feet of the youths, who were kicking and stabbing Blake and the other man. Sepulveda raised his police badge and shouted, “Police officer! Don’t move!” The gang immediately scattered. Blake and his companion were both hospitalized for extensive injuries.
