Emily Jean Cober saved Anna Mae Simons, Edith M. Tuttle, and Leon A. Northrop, Jr., from drowning, Monroeton, Pennsylvania, August 7, 1940. While wading in Towanda Creek, Edith, 17, stepped into water 10 feet deep and pulled Anna, 9, with her. Anna took hold of Edith; and they were submerged briefly, drifting to a point 20 feet from the bank. Emily, 16, schoolgirl, waded from the bank, swam 12 feet to the girls, and took hold of Anna. The weight of the girls forced her head briefly under the surface, and Anna took hold of Emily’s hair. Emily tried to remove Anna’s hold, and Anna tried to climb onto her back. She submerged, and Anna released her hair. Rising to the surface and holding Anna’s arm, Emily with hard exertion then swam towing the girls 10 feet. She called for aid and then stood in water three feet deep. Others carried Anna, who was semiconscious, to the bank; and Edith and Emily waded to the bank. Emily was somewhat unnerved. A half a minute later she waded and then swam 27 feet in deep water to Leon, 11, who was in difficulty. Taking hold of Leon, who became unconscious, she swam towing him 25 feet to wadable water and dragged him to the bank. She then was badly winded. Anna and Leon were revived. 38658-3213
