Emmet L. Allen, 35, riveter, died attempting to save Willa C. Woodfin, 18, from drowning, Park Place, Oregon, June 9, 1918. Miss Woodfin, while swimming in the Clackamas River 30 feet from the bank, swallowed some water, became frightened, and called for help. She grasped a girl companion and went under the surface with her. They returned to the surface, and she released her companion and began to float. Allen, who was dressed, plunged into the river and swam 125 feet to Miss Woodfin. Just as he was about to give aid to her, he threw up his hands and called for help. He then disappeared and was drowned. Miss Woodfin was rescued by another man. 19117-1515
