Emmett Trichel died attempting to save Herman L. Tharp from drowning, Fondale, Louisana, March 28, 1942. While paddling a cross-tie in Petticoat Bayou, Herman, 13, schoolboy, fell from it into water eight feet deep, was submerged briefly, and got to a point 11 feet from the bank. Emmett, 15, schoolboy, who was clothed and who could not swim, waded from the bank, extending his arms toward Herman. Reaching water three feet deep at the edge of a steep slope, he took another step and was submerged, rising seven feet from the bank in deeper water. His brother Hubert stood in wadable water, got hold of Emmett, but fell into the deep water; and Emmett sank and was drowned. Hubert got hold of the cross-tie and reached wadable water. Meanwhile Herman was drowned. 39470-3273
