Enos A. Dias saved Thelma I. Brown from drowning, Ventura, California, May 15, 1927. While wading in the Pacific Ocean 180 feet from shore, Miss Brown, 19, lost footing in rough surf and was carried by a strong current farther from shore through breakers five feet high. After others had made futile efforts to aid her and one man had left her after freeing himself from her grasp, Dias, 22, truck driver, with great difficulty swam 200 feet to her. He then swam with her toward shore, but he was carried back and forth in the rough water. When he got close to the shore and had become weak, others helped him to take Miss Brown to shore. Dias had been in the water about 15 minutes. 27308-2176
