Erford H. Coon, 12, schoolboy, helped to save Carl H. W. Verbeck, 9, and died attempting to save Harold L. Stevens, Jr., 7, from drowning, Manlius, New York, December 4, 1909. Erford, who was heavily clothed and could not swim, crawled to the edge of the ice, 40 feet below Manlius Falls, where it had broken under Carl and Harold. He was pulled into the water while trying to draw Harold out. Erford grabbed the ice with one hand and shoved Carl with the other, while a boy on the ice pulled him out with a stick. Erford, partly supported by a log, then paddled to Harold and supported him until unable to do so no longer, and both were drowned. 5120-447
