Ernest H. Mizelle helped to save Frances A. and Dallas E. McKnight from burning, Newton Grove, North Carolina, November 25, 1976. In a highway accident, a pickup truck came to rest on its side and flames broke out behind the cab, inside which the McKnights, 48 and 51, were lying unconscious. Mizelle, 27, police officer, ran to the cab, where the windshield had popped out, and took hold of Mrs. McKnight by the arm as another man arrived. Putting one foot inside the cab, Mizelle obtained a better hold on Mrs. McKnight and, aided by the man, removed her from the truck. Mizelle then tried to pull McKnight out of the track but found he was caught. Stepping fully into the cab, Mizelle freed McKnight and partially removed him. Others then assisted. Neither of the McKnights had sustained burns, but Mrs. McKnight died of injuries suffered in the accident.
