Ernest J. Boughey, 32, clubhouse manager, died attempting to save John J. Herrington, 44, clubhouse engineer, from suffocation, Sioux City, Iowa, May 11, 1926. Herrington was overcome by gas in a manway, 12 feet deep, that surrounded an indoor swimming pool. After another man had twice attempted rescue, Boughey, through a small manhole, descended a ladder, one of his hands being held by the first man, until the latter became unconscious. Boughey then collapsed and lost his life. He had known the air was not good in the manway, and efforts were made to restrain him when he was about to enter. Herrington was dead as well when taken out of the manhole. The other man was revived. 26241-2264
