Ernest Lee Pennix, 14, farmhand, rescued Mack M. Hatcher, 40, farmhand, from an enraged bull, Lynchburg, Virginia, October 10, 1945. While walking a pasture, Hatcher was struck and tossed by a bull and finally lay against the bank of a shallow run. The bull bellowed and pawed on the opposite bank within five feet of Hatcher, who was bleeding from a wound in his thigh. Ernest, carrying a pitchfork, ran toward Hatcher. He got in contact with a lightly-charged wire and received a shock that caused him to fall. He then ran to a fence near Hatcher. Avoiding a similar wire, he climbed over the fence, lunged toward the bull, and jabbed its side with the fork. The bull backed a step and, bellowing, trotted away. Ernest then aided Hatcher to walk toward the gate 50 feet from them. When they were within five feet of the gate, Ernest saw the bull trotting toward them. Leaving Hatcher, he ran to the bull and jabbed its nose with the fork. The bull turned and ran to the other end of the pasture. Ernest then aided Hatcher out of the gate. Hatcher’s wounded thigh required eight stitches, but he recovered. 40560-3455
