Ernest Ward, 24, student, saved A. Ewing Wright, 16, and J. Raleigh Potts, 17, students, from drowning, Shelbyville, Tennessee, April 24, 1915. Ewing, Raleigh, Ward, and another boy fell from a boat which upset and sank in the Duck River 80 feet from the bank, where the water was 12 feet deep. One of the boys swam to the bank. Ewing and Raleigh called for help and went under the surface. Ward swam 20 feet to Ewing, grasped his hair, and called for help. Raleigh then came to the surface and again called for help. Ward released Ewing, swam 14 feet to Raleigh, grasped his arm, and held his head above the surface. Raleigh struggled and made an unsuccessful attempt to grasp Ward. A boat then came near, and Ward released Raleigh, swam back to Ewing, and held his head above the surface. All three were then reached by the boat and taken to the bank. 14631-1512
