Ernest Wier, 18, laborer, saved Laura J. Darrow, 16, and Caroline S. McGinness, 17, and died attempting to save Bertha L Brown, 17, from drowning, Flemington, Pennsylvania, June 12, 1920. (See case of LAURA J. DARROW.) Wier waded from the bank and swam, fully dressed, 35 feet to Laura and Bertha. He separated them, took hold of Laura as she was sinking, and swam with her 30 feet to wadable water. Caroline meanwhile waded from the bank and got into deep water. Wier swam 15 feet to her, put one arm around her and allowed her to place her arm around his neck, and swam with her 15 feet to wadable water. Wier then swam 35 feet to Bertha, who had gone under the surface repeatedly and was dazed. Wier took hold of her, but she at once grasped him at the neck or shoulder, and both sank slightly. Wier attempted to swim toward the bank but made no progress. He suddenly gave a cry of distress, released his hold on Bertha, sank, and was drowned. 20618-1661
