Ervin W. Carey, 16, schoolboy, saved Richard H. Dunn, 13, and Stephen D. Vouch, 13, schoolboys, from drowning, Lawrence Park, Pennsylvania, April 26, 1943. A small raft on which Richard and Stephen were riding in Lake Erie drifted away from shore to water 12 feet deep. They tried to paddle with their hands but made no progress. From shore Ervin, who had removed his clothing, waded and then swam pushing a light green pole 235 feet to the raft. He was very cold and was becoming tired. He tried to climb onto the raft, but it nearly capsized. The pole was of no use because it did not reach bottom. Ervin then swam pushing the raft to shore, having been in the water 20 minutes. His hands were numb from cold, and he was tired. 39848-3313
