Erwin H. Babb attempted to save Jarred F. Preston from burning, Tyler, Texas, March 27, 1986. In a highway accident, Jarred, eight months old, was pinned in the rear seat of a car driven by his mother. Gasoline from the car’s fuel tank flowed onto the highway as Babb, 37, minister, ran to the car and, standing in the gasoline, opened the passenger door. Babb had just moved the front seat forward to gain access to Jarred when the gasoline ignited. Babb’s clothing caught fire; he rolled on the ground to extinguish the flames. Another man entered the car through its driver’s door and removed Jarred. Babb was hospitalized three weeks for second- and third- degree burns to 30 percent of his body, and he recovered.
