Esther R. Beard saved Gertrude A. Gentry from drowning, Oxford, Ohio, November 3, 1921. Gertrude, 14, fell into Tallawanda Creek and came to the surface 10 feet from the bank, where the water was six feet deep. Miss Beard, 20, student, who was a poor swimmer and in poor physical condition, slid down the bank, fully clothed, and swam 10 feet to her. Gertrude grasped Miss Beard’s neck with both hands, choking her and momentarily submerging her. Miss Beard broke the hold and grasped Gertrude’s arm, but she could not retain her hold because of Gertrude’s violent kicking in her direction. She then dived under Gertrude, and as she came up, she grasped Gertrude’s left hand, pulled Gertrude upon her back, and then swam 10 feet with Gertrude to the bank. 21993-1965
