Eugene Arthur Baker attempted to save a woman from drowning, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, October 28, 1981. As a 35-year-old woman was being carried downstream by the current of the South Saskatchewan River, Baker, 47, unemployed carpenter, broke through ice along the bank and began to swim toward her. When he drew near to the woman, she began to swim for the bank. Exhausted and cold, Baker also swam toward the bank, but he was unable to continue when about 30 feet from it. A police officer swam out and helped Baker to wadable water then returned and brought the woman in. Baker and the woman both recovered from ill effects of the cold water.
