Eugene Lund, 24, student, saved Adrian A. Kearney, 22, student, from drowning, Wabasha, Minnesota, June 12, 1921. Kearney became exhausted while swimming in deep water in the Mississippi River 150 feet from the bank, and he called for help to Lund, who was swimming 50 feet ahead of him. As Kearney was carried near Lund by the current, Lund dived for him but failed to locate him. They rose, and Kearney grabbed Lund at the neck with both hands, and both were submerged. Lund freed himself, but Kearney then grasped his shoulder. Supporting Kearney at the surface, Lund swam and was carried by the current 300 feet to wadable water. They reached the bank safely, both in an exhausted condition. 22142-1886
