Eugene Paul Snyder rescued Robert D. Wagner from burning, Fremont, Ohio, October 22, 1982. Following a highway accident, Wagner, 36, was unconscious in the passenger seat of his burning pickup truck. Snyder, 22, mechanic, ran to the truck and, despite flames 12 feet high on the passenger side, leaned into it through the opened driver’s door. He seized Wagner, who was aflame, and pulled him across the seat. After freeing Wagner when he became wedged between the steering wheel and the seat, Snyder and another man took Wagner from the truck, and Snyder extinguished the flames on Wagner. Wagner sustained extensive third-degree burns and was hospitalized; Snyder recovered from lesser burns.
