Eugene Spencer Brooks, 17, student, saved Emerson O. McLean, 17, student, from drowning, Antrim, New Hampshire, July 15, 1917. Emerson weakened and sank under the surface while swimming in Gregg Lake 80 feet from shore. He rose and struggled violently. Eugene swam 40 feet to Emerson, who grasped Eugene at the throat and held his left arm securely at his side. They sank together, and Eugene broke Emerson’s hold when they rose. Eugene then took hold of Emerson and swam with him about 45 feet to wadable water. 18447-1634
