Eugene W. Rife, aged 23, shoe cutter, died attempting to save George R. Gordon, 28, hodcarrier, from drowning, Hanover, Pennsylvania, July 7, 1912. Gordon, who could not swim, got into deep water 20 feet from the bank of a hole in a quarry and went beneath the surface. Rife sprang into the water and swam to him. When Gordon came up, he grabbed Rife around the waist and pulled him beneath the surface. They struggled together for about five minutes, and then both were drowned. 9667-852
