Eunice A. Dickey, 28, teacher, saved Charles Banister, 30, homesteader, from suffocation, Gillette, Wyoming, July 12, 1916. Banister was overcome at the bottom of a 45-foot well. A man was lowered about 10 feet but felt that the gas was affecting him and called to be withdrawn. Although three men at the well tried to dissuade her, Miss Dickey tied a rope to herself and had the men lower her. She attached a rope to Banister, and they were drawn up together. Miss Dickey was slightly affected when she reached the top, but she helped to revive Banister. She later suffered a nervous collapse but recovered. 17020-1342
