Eva Clark Doubleday, 35, housewife, attempted to save Vincent L. Maynes, 3, from drowning, Woodstock, Vermont, December 6, 1919. Vincent fell into Kedron Brook, in which the water was 4.5 feet deep. He floated about 400 feet in a strong current. Mrs. Doubleday, who could not swim, ran about 500 feet to the brook, stepped out on a rim of ice about five feet from the bank, and jumped into the water. Her feet touched bottom, but she was carried along by the current and was in danger of being carried under ice which covered the width of the stream a short distance from her. She grasped Vincent as he floated near her, unconscious, and attempted to lift him but was not strong enough. She held Vincent briefly with one hand and grasped the edge of the ice with the other, but the current took her off her feet, her head went under water and she released Vincent. He floated 10 feet farther, and a man jumped into the brook and rescued Vincent. The man then rescued Mrs. Doubleday. She was exhausted and was disabled 42 days. 20360-1662
