Evelyn May Papcke saved Evelyn R. Bruhn from drowning, Rocky River, Ohio, August 6, 1932. While Evelyn Bruhn, 15, was swimming in a pond, she became tired, went under the surface in water 25 feet deep 40 feet from the bank, and threshed wildly. Miss Papcke, 19, schoolgirl, who was swimming at a point 400 feet from her, swam rapidly to her and took hold of her arm. Evelyn wrapped her legs around Miss Papcke and grasped her head, and both were submerged. Miss Papcke freed herself, and both rose. Miss Papcke took hold of Evelyn and swam 35 feet to a stake that rose above the surface, where they rested three minutes. While Evelyn held to the stake, Miss Papcke swam a 115 feet to a raft and paddled it to her. She helped Evelyn aboard and then paddled the raft to the bank. 32639-2777
