Evelyn St. John Krause, 23, hair-dresser, saved Katherine T. Lennon, 3, from drowning, New York, New York, February 23, 1939. Catherine got into water five and a half feet deep in Eastchester Bay, lost consciousness, and drifted to a point 90 feet from shore and 18 feet from a pier. The water was very cold. From the pier Miss Krause, who was in poor health and was clothed except for her shoes, descended steps to the water and then swam 25 feet to Catherine. Getting hold of Catherine, she swam back to the steps. Weak and dizzy Miss Krause called for help and then with great effort climbed to the floor of the pier. Catherine was revived. Miss Krause staggered from weakness and was fully disabled for a week.
