Everett F. Patten, 26, student, assisted in an attempt to save Esther M. Wepking and Arthur A. Harwood, both 23, from drowning, Madison, Wisconsin, April 24, 1921. (See case of SIDNEY J. BENTLEY.) Patten was Bentley’s companion in the canoe. When the capsizing occurred, Patten got brief support from a floating cushion, and not having a life preserver, he then clung to the raft. Finally in despair of being rescued, Patten started to swim toward shore, but as the motorboat approached, he was called back to the raft, having swum only 30 feet. He was taken to shore in the motorboat. 21362-1892
