Everett G. Nichols, 39, locomotive hostler, saved Jeff Hickey, 46, laborer, from suffocation, Murphy, North Carolina, September 18, 1925. While Hickey was at work at the bottom of a well 65 feet deep, he was overcome by gas. Nichols, who previously had been slightly affected by gas in the well, descended on a windlass rope and tied the rope around Hickey, and Hickey was drawn out. The rope was lowered to Nichols, and Nichols looped it under his arms and was drawn out. He was very weak and felt the effects of the gas for several days. Hickey was revived. 25641-2243
