Everett T. King died attempting to save John P. Chwalek from drowning, Oswego, New York, July 31, 1933. John, 10, fell from a vertical wall into water 15 feet deep in the forebay at a powerhouse at a point 30 feet from a dam and was briefly submerged. There was a current of 3 m.p.h. from open gates at the bottom of the dam, and there were eddies and swirls. A 12-year-old male companion also fell or was pulled into the water. Both drifted to a point eight feet from the wall. King, 27, chauffeur, and Fred J. Handley ran to the dam from the opposite side of the forebay. Wearing shirt and shoes, King jumped from the dam 12 feet down to the water. Handley ran to the wall from which the boys fell, jumped into the water, and took hold of the boys, who were struggling wildly. Holding the two, he swam a few feet toward a part of the dam that was two feet above the water. King then reached John and temporarily supported him. Holding the other boy, Handley swam to the dam, and another man lifted the boy out of the water. A man who was a swimmer heard a cry for help from King, and he dived and swam toward King and John. Before the man reached them, King sank. The man took hold of John and swam to the dam, and both were helped out of the water. King was drowned. 33467-2765
