F. Lawrence Byrne died attempting to save William S. Ward from drowning, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 21, 1915. William, 12, fell off a raft while playing on a pond and went beneath the surface in water eight feet deep. Lawrence, 11, schoolboy, who could swim, was on another raft near William. Knowing that William could not swim, Lawrence jumped into the water. He went slightly beneath the surface and then made a stroke or two with his arms. Lawrence then went beneath the surface and was drowned. William was drowned soon afterwards. 14905-1144
