F. Leslie Morton, 29, carpenter, died saving D. Jerrine Smith, 14, from drowning, Oswego, Oregon, June 28, 1925. While Jerrine was swimming in the Willamette River 40 feet from the bank, she became frightened and began to struggle. Morton swam 100 feet to her and then swam eight feet with her toward wadable water. He gave her a shove toward two men, who stood in water to their shoulders, and then sank almost immediately.
