F. Stuart Sarber, 20, student, died attempting to save Bernice M. Gibson, 17, from drowning, Indianapolis, Indiana, July 2, 1914. A motorboat at night struck a canoe in which Bernice and a companion were paddling on the White River, and they were thrown into deep water at a point 40 feet from the bank. Bernice’s companion grasped the motorboat and shouted for someone to save Bernice, as he could not swim. Bernice went beneath the surface and did not come up. The motorboat ran to the bank. Sarber was in another canoe near the scene. He paddled to the point where Bernice had gone beneath the surface and jumped into the water. He did not reappear. The bodies were recovered 25 minutes later, and it was found that Bernice and Sarber had become entangled in pieces of barbed wire. 14097-1192
