Farris F. Branan, Jr., 14, student, attempted to save Gladys E. Kehew, 16, from drowning, Winthrop, Massachusetts, July 13, 1916. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean 100 feet from shore, Gladys became distressed and sank under the surface. She rose and called for help, and Farris swam 100 feet to her. She grasped him around the neck, and both sank under the surface. Farris broke her hold as they rose, and Gladys became semiconscious and ceased to struggle. Farris grasped her and swam a short distance toward shore with her, but he became exhausted and could make no further progress. They were rescued by other swimmers. 16987-1616
