Flora E. Ruslander saved William A. Cluchey from drowning, Crystal Beach, Ontario, July 8, 1912. Cluchey, 21, laborer, who could not swim, got into deep water at a point 460 feet from the shore of Lake Erie and 25 feet from a pier. He went beneath the surface once or twice, and a man swam to his assistance. Cluchey grabbed him, and they went beneath the surface. The man got loose and swam away, leaving Cluchey 20 feet farther from shore. Flora, 17, stenographer, was then swimming to Cluchey. She grasped Cluchey’s shoulder with one hand, and he immediately put his hand on her and forced her beneath the surface. She used both hands in an effort to swim, and although she did not come to the surface, she kept Cluchey’s head at the surface. A life preserver was thrown to Cluchey, and when he grasped it and released Flora, she came to the surface. A man assisted her to wadable water. She was dazed, but she revived. 9148-1040
