Florus W. Carrier, 48, insurance agent and ferryman, saved Patrick F. Gannon, 32, from drowning, Smiths Ferry, Massachusetts, March 16, 1907. To reach Gannon, who had broken through the ice on the Connecticut River, Carrier crossed 600 feet of ice, breaking through many times but always getting out by means of a pike pole and a board, which he slid on the ice on either side of him. Crossing the pole and board, he rested his weight on them and dragged Gannon partly out of the hole and supported him, unconscious, for one and one-half hours, until the arrival of two boats that took them to shore. 1702-142
