Floyd L. Young, 23, student, attempted to save Harold F. Korn, 21, student, from drowning, Ann Arbor, Michigan, January 7, 1916. Young and Korn were skating on the Huron River. Korn tried to cross the river but broke through the ice into water eight feet deep, 100 feet from the bank. The temperature was 10 degrees above zero. Young procured a board and crept over the ice toward Korn, whom he could not see for the darkness. The ice was cracking under him, and the water was rising on the ice about him, but he kept on until he reached the end of the board to Korn. As he tried to pull Korn out, the ice broke and let him into the water. He and Korn supported themselves and called for help, but none arrived for a half-hour. When a man finally reached the scene with a boat, Korn had drowned, and Young was exhausted. Young was disabled a day and a half, and five of his fingers were frozen. 15982-1221
