Frances C. Woods, 23, school teacher, saved Harry C. Vaughan, 41, truck driver, from drowning, Rockaway, Oregon, July 4, 1924. While Vaughan was swimming in the Pacific Ocean, he was carried by a strong undertow to a point 325 feet from shore, where the water was 6.5 feet deep. The surf was rough. Miss Woods, astride a horse, urged the horse into the surf toward Vaughan after a man refused to ride the horse to Vaughan. The horse twice got out of her control and returned to wadable water after getting close to Vaughan. Finally after much urging, Miss Woods got the horse within reach of Vaughan, and as the horse again swerved to turn toward shore, she grasped one of Vaughan’s hands. As the horse swam toward wadable water, the current swung Vaughan behind Miss Woods, and she was pulled from the saddle. She was a poor swimmer but kept her hold on the reins and on Vaughan as the horse towed them to wadable water. Vaughan was unconscious but was revived. He at some time had been struck on the breast by the horse’s hoof. 24574-2085
