Francis C. Dimond, Jr., attempted to save Clarence J. Kulberg from drowning, Magnolia, Massachusetts, September 2, 1940. Kulberg, 19, student, was swept from barnacle-covered and steep-sloping rocks at the shore into the Atlantic Ocean, was buffeted by high waves, and drifted in water 15 feet deep 20 feet from shore. Dimond, 18, student, dived from the rocks, swam to Kulberg, and took hold of him. He swam towing Kulberg 15 feet toward shore, and then they were washed back and forth. Dimond again swam towing Kulberg but could not control his movements, and they were washed farther out and were submerged. They became separated, and Dimond rose to the surface. Kulberg was drowned. Dimond twice swam to the rocks but was washed from them, sustaining cuts. Getting hold of a small log, he then drifted 200 feet from shore; and after he had been in the water for about 25 minutes, he was rescued by Coast-guardsmen in a boat. He was exhausted but recovered. 38579-3188
