Francis J. Brennan, 60, executive director Housing Authority, saved Kenneth A., 7, and Robert E. Mackas, 9, from drowning, Stratford, Connecticut, December 23, 1943. Robert walked on ice on a pond close to an area of open water that extended 20 feet from the bank; and the ice broke under him. He got hold of the ice. Kenneth ran on the ice to Robert, broke through, and got on Robert’s back. Brennan, fully clothed, waded from the bank and then swam 12 feet, took hold of Kenneth, and swam 15 feet to wadable water. Brennan then swam toward Robert. When he was 10 feet from Robert, the ice which Robert held broke; and Robert was submerged. Brennan swam under the surface to a point a foot under the ice, took hold of Robert’s jacket, swam backwards, and rose in the open water. He then swam with effort, towing Robert to wadable water. 40107-3360
